September 2026 - Our Lady of Sorrows

September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. This is a title that honors the Blessed Virgin Mary in her suffering, especially as she shared in the Passion and death of her Son, Jesus Christ. The Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Meaning of Our Lady of Sorrows

This devotion invites us to reflect on Mary's faith, courage, and steadfast love during the most painful moments of her life. Mary is seen as the mother who suffered alongside Jesus and who understands human sorrow, loss, and suffering.

Blessed Mother Mary,
Our Lady of Sorrows,
you stood faithfully beside your Son through His suffering and death.

Teach me to trust God in times of sorrow,
to carry my crosses with courage,
and to remain steadfast in faith when life is difficult.

​

Comfort all who grieve, heal the brokenhearted,
and help us to grow in compassion for those who suffer.

​

Through your loving intercession,
lead us always closer to Jesus.

​

​Amen.

The above prayer invites us to become more like Mary: trusting, faithful, courageous, compassionate, and deeply united with Jesus. Through reflecting on the sorrows of Our Lady, we learn that suffering can open our hearts to greater love, empathy, and dependence on God.
