LENT 2026

What is Lent?

Lent is a Christian season of reflection, repentance, and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter. Traditionally lasting 40 days (not counting Sundays), it begins on Ash Wednesday (February 18, 2026) and commemorates the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. During Lent, many Christians focus on practices such as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to deepen their faith and grow in self-discipline. It is a time to slow down, reflect on one’s life, and renew one’s relationship with God.

Here are some of the most common Lenten practices observed by many Christians:

1. Fasting

  • Traditionally, people reduce the amount they eat or avoid certain foods.

  • Many Christians abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent.

  • On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, some churches encourage fasting or eating only one full meal.

2. Giving Something Up

  • Often called a Lenten sacrifice, this can include:

    • Sweets or snacks

    • Social media

    • Coffee or alcohol

    • Screen time or other habits

  • The goal is to practice self‑discipline and make more room for prayer and reflection.

3. Prayer

  • Increasing daily prayer is central to Lent.

  • People may:

    • Attend church more often

    • Pray the Stations of the Cross

    • Read Scripture or devotional material

    • Spend more time in silence or meditation

4. Acts of Charity

  • Helping those in need through:

    • Donations

    • Volunteering

    • Caring for vulnerable people

  • It emphasizes compassion and generosity.

5. Confession and Spiritual Renewal

  • Many Christians receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession).

  • It’s a time to examine one’s life and seek spiritual growth.

6. Special Church Services

  • Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday services guide believers through Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection.

Prayer for Lent

Loving God,

" As I enter this season of Lent, help me to slow down and open my heart to You. Teach me to let go of what distracts me, and to seek what leads me closer to Your love. Give me strength in times of temptation, patience in moments of struggle, and gratitude in all things. May my prayer, my sacrifices, and my acts of kindness draw me deeper into compassion and hope. Walk with me on this journey of renewal, so that at Easter my heart may be made new."
Amen.
