Growing closer to God is not about perfection, it is about presence. It is a daily turning of the heart toward the one who already loves us beyond measure. Here are ten ways to deepen your relationship with him:
1. Pray Daily, Even Briefly
Start with just five minutes each morning. Talk to God as you would a friend. Share your hopes, your worries, your gratitude. "Come near to God and he will come near to you..." (James 4:8)
2. Read Scripture with an Open Heart
Let the word speak to you personally. Even one verse a day, slowly reflected upon, can transform your spirit. "Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)
3. Receive the Eucharist and attend confession
Receiving the eucharist and attending confession on a regular basis are powerful encounters with Christ. Make time for mass and regular confession, these are moments of deep grace and healing.
4. Practice Silence and Stillness
God often speaks in the quiet. Set aside time to simply be still before him. "Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10). Spending time in nature allows for us to do just that and quiet our minds.
5. Serve Others with Love
Every act of charity draws us closer to the heart of Christ. "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)
6. Surround Yourself with Faith
Join a prayer or bible group, read the saints, listen to sacred music. Community strengthens our walk with God. "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20)
7. Trust God in All Things
Surrender your plans to him. Trust that his timing is perfect and his love unfailing. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5) 8. Give Thanks in Every Season
Choose gratitude in both good times and challenges. A thankful heart keeps you aware of God’s presence and goodness. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
9. Walk in Obedience Choose to follow God’s guidance even when it’s difficult. Obedience builds trust and draws you nearer to his heart. "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me." (John 14:21)
10. Let Go of Worry Release your anxieties to God and trust him to take care of your needs. Letting go of worry frees your heart to rest in his peace. "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)
Growing closer to God is a lifelong journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself. He is already reaching out to you, all you need to do is reach back.
