JULY 2026 - Precious Blood of Jesus
The dedication to the Precious Blood of Jesus in July is a long-standing devotional tradition in the Catholic Church that focuses on honoring and reflecting on the blood Christ shed for the salvation of humanity. It is about honoring his sacrifice, reflecting on his saving love, and deepening one’s faith in the power of his redemption.
What is the “Precious Blood”?
The Precious Blood of Jesus refers to the blood Christ shed during his Passion and Crucifixion, as well as the blood that is made present sacramentally in the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Jesus' blood is redemptive, meaning it saves humanity from sin; cleansing, in that it washes away sin; and life-giving, as it restores and strengthens spiritual life.
Meaning of the July Dedication
Dedicating the month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus invites us to meditate on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice, grow in gratitude for the gift of salvation, seek forgiveness and genuine conversion, and place our trust in God’s mercy. This devotion highlights that salvation is not without cost, reminding believers of the total self-gift of Jesus, who gave everything out of love for humanity.
Historical Background
The devotion to the Precious Blood spread widely throughout the Church, especially in the 19th century. Pope Pius IX officially promoted this devotion in 1849 after returning to Rome from exile, helping to establish it more firmly in Catholic practice. A specific feast, the Feast of the Precious Blood, was once celebrated on July 1, though it is now integrated into other liturgical celebrations following the reforms of 1969.
Common Devotions in July
We are invited to observe the devotion to the Precious Blood through various spiritual practices, including praying the Litany of the Precious Blood, engaging in daily prayers or novenas, and meditating on the Passion of Christ, especially his wounds. We may also deepen our devotion by participating in Mass and spending time in Eucharistic adoration, drawing closer to Christ through reflection, prayer, and worship.
Spiritual Focus
This devotion highlights God’s immense love for humanity, the great price of redemption paid through Christ’s sacrifice, and the call for all believers to pursue holiness and repentance in their daily lives.
Prayer
O Precious Blood of Jesus, thank you for loving me and giving your life for me.
Help me to remember how much I am loved every day.
Wash away my sins and make my heart clean.
Help me to choose what is good and to follow you.
Stay with me, protect me, and guide me always.
Help me to love you more each day.
Amen.
The above prayer invites us to recognize and respond to Jesus’ love in a personal way. It calls us to be grateful for his sacrifice, to remember that we are deeply loved, and to trust in his mercy. It also invites us to seek inner change, to ask for forgiveness, to let our hearts be cleansed, and to try to choose what is good in our daily lives. The prayer encourages us to stay close to Jesus, asking for his protection and guidance, and to grow in love for him each day.
With much love and gratitude. May God bless you all.
