August 2026 - Immaculate Heart of Mary

August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This monthly devotion invites us to reflect on Mary's interior life. Her love for God, her love for Jesus, her purity, faithfulness, compassion, and willingness to accept God's will.

What does the "Immaculate Heart" mean?

The Immaculate Heart symbolizes Mary's:

• Pure and sinless love for God

• Deep union with her Son, Jesus

• Compassion for humanity

• Joys and sorrows experienced throughout her life

• Faithful meditation on God's works in her heart (Luke 2:19).

In artwork, Mary's heart is often shown:

• Pierced by a sword, representing her sorrows, especially witnessing Christ's Passion

• Surrounded by roses or flowers, symbolizing her virtues and purity

• Aflame with love, representing her burning love for God and humanity.

Why August?

Since the 16th century, a particular devotion has traditionally been assigned to each month. August became associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a way of encouraging the faithful to imitate Mary's virtues and to seek her intercession.

Connection to Fatima

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart gained special prominence after the Fatima apparitions of 1917 in Portugal. Mary asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart, prayer of the Rosary, and acts of reparation for sins. The practice of the Five First Saturdays is closely linked to this devotion.

How to observe this devotion in August

Many people choose to:

• Pray the Rosary daily

• Consecrate themselves or their families to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

• Practice the Five First Saturdays devotion

• Meditate on Mary's joys and sorrows

• Attend Mass on Marian feast days, especially the Assumption of Mary (August 15) and the Queenship of Mary (August 22)

The heart of the devotion is simple: to draw closer to Jesus through Mary. We look to Mary's heart as a model of trust, humility, purity, and unconditional love for God.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary,
gentle Mother full of love and grace,
teach me to trust God as you did
and to keep His word close to my heart.
 

Help me to love Jesus more deeply,
to walk in faith when life is difficult,
and to offer kindness, patience, and compassion to others.
 

During this month dedicated to your Immaculate Heart,
draw me closer to your Son.
Purify my thoughts, strengthen my hope,
and fill my heart with peace.
 

Mary, my Mother, pray for me,
guide me in God's will,
and help me grow in holiness each day.

The above prayer invites us to become more like Mary so that we can become closer to Jesus. It is a prayer of trust, transformation, and discipleship, opening our hearts to God's love and allowing that love to shape the way we live each day.
